HOW I WORK

I have been studying (and making) furniture making for many years, both at Leeds Building College and Leeds College of Art and Design. That, combined with having been a salesperson and manager, has ensured my commitment to service and quality. I, like you, get well fed up when someone turns up late, or maybe not at all. If I say I will be there at 8, I will be. If I say I will quote, I will.

The process of designing and making furniture is great, and the best results are gained when the client is intimately involved in the design process. This usually begins via ‘phone or e mail. Once we have had an initial discussion, I visit you at your home, at a time to suit you (usually evenings and weekends - that's when you are in after all). This is to see what environment the piece is for and draw inspiration together from it.

Then I prepare initial sketches and wood samples where appropriate. Once we have looked at those and decided the design, I produce drawings and a quote, with detailed description, so you and I both know exactly what is to be made. Once work has started you are welcome either to come to the workshop, or I can bring the “work in progress” to you, to make sure you are happy with the quality all the way along the process.

I won’t change the agreed price after producing a written quote unless we mutually agree, usually because you want to change things a bit. You keep 10% of the agreed price back until a month after the piece has been delivered. I want to make sure you are completely happy before signing off the work, so I return to check this, and collect the final payment. I ask for 30% up front to buy the materials (as this helps keep my overheads, and therefore prices, down).

I work from home in Shadwell, Leeds. You can see one of the 2 workshops on the “contact me” page. This also helps me remain competitive with most furniture retailers (except maybe the Scandinavian one with a yellow and blue logo).
